New Info About Delta 8 and Delta 9 THC

I just read an article from Harvard’s website. This is very cool. Keep in mind that I can’t make medical claims, so I’m going to tip toe around some stuff. I’ll put a link to the article at the end.

Does Delta 8 THC have the same medicinal properties as Delta 9 THC?

Medical Cannabis has been legal in California since 1996. People have been using cannabis as medicine longer than anyone reading this has been alive. Preventing nausea and stimulating appetite in people undergoing chemotherapy were some of the first medical uses of Delta 9 THC. D9 is very effective in treating these conditions. One drawback (not for everyone) of D9 is it is very psychoactive. This psychoactivity is the main reason for this chemical’s legal status.

Now let’s jump over to Delta 8. We learned in a previous post that D8 is also psychoactive, but it is less psychoactive than D9. Some people incorrectly assume this makes D9 ‘stronger.’ D9 has stronger psychoactive properties, but that doesn’t mean that it is stronger in every way. You’ll read that D8 is about 60% as psychoactive as D9 and I do agree based on my research and experience. However, even if you take 60% more D8 to try and mimic D9’s effects, it’s still slightly different. The best way that I can describe is D9 is more dissociative than D8. What I mean by this is that D9 is a little ‘trippier’ and makes me get confused or forget things – kinda like a stereotypical ‘movie stoner.’ This Brad Pitt in True Romance with the honey bear bong.

Delta 8, on the other hand, still makes you feel something, but it keeps me more connected to reality and doesn’t trend towards anxiety (for me). Heavy cannabis users who don’t get anxiety from D9 say that D8 actually makes them sleepy. It really interested to see how all of our CYP 450 systems are unique.

So, the big question and point of this article is to learn if Delta 8 has similar medicinal properties to D9.

Yes, it does (according to Harvard).

Because Delta 8 hasn’t been available for consumption for very long, there hasn’t been a lot of hardcore studies done yet. Everyone assumes that it certainly shares several characteristics of D9, we just aren’t sure which ones and how much.

This study gave 10 kids with cancer 18mg of Delta 8 prior to administering chemotherapy treatment. Everyone knows that 2 of the immediate and worst parts of chemo is nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. The D8 stopped the nausea and increased the appetite of all 10 children they tested it on. Equally exciting is that the side effects and psychoactive effects were insigificant.

This is awesome! I know that a lot of people want the psychoactivity of D9, but there are also a lot that don’t. Also, it’s better to avoid psychoactive compounds when you’re dealing with children.

This info is very new and more research is being done, but early tests showing that low doses of D8 offer several medicinal benefits as D9 without getting anyone high is very cool. I can’t wait to learn more about this as more information becomes available.

Thanks for reading!
